Poly-Rule Post-revival-mortem

I had originally posted Poly-Rule (I want to say) two years ago. I learned a lot about making a puzzle game, designing puzzles, and creating systems that led to what I would call a game I was proud of. But in the following years I did more game dev and really improved. I found myself working on creating external tools to help translate from human logic to code quicker using JSONs and Electron.JS. After working on dialogue editors, I thought "why not make a level editor for Poly-Rule as an exercise?" After it was made, I thought "well what's the point of the editor if it doesn't translate into the game itself?"

And so I dusted off Poly-Rule and got to work. Navigating the project was hell considering I wasn't up-to-date with the best practices. A lot of cleanup was necessary before I could add any new feature. And once the implementation of JSON to in-game level was complete, converting the levels from Unity scenes to JSONs using my editor was easy. After that, I thought, why not make more levels? Why not add a full world's worth of levels? Why not make the level select menu scale automatically? I found myself adding so many more improvements to the game's code that should've been there to begin with. The game now scales really nicely.

The game also cut some UX corners. There were no confirmation boxes, no tooltips, no way to reset a level after beating it, etc. I went back and added in that functionality to lead to a better user experience.

I had also gotten into shaders and so the game has a much needed graphical update. Two years ago the game did not nearly look this polished and I thought it looked amazing back then. Coming back to it after implementing some pretty fun shaders made the old visual look bland, and the icons looked like they didn't match the aesthetic. The game's feel is much more satisfying to me now.

Unfortunately, I don't really have more puzzles to design for it. I'm not a fan of puzzles overly repeating twists, tricks and gimmicks. So unless I add new mechanics, I think I've exhausted the interesting puzzles I have the time to design right now.

I hope you give the new and improved Poly-Rule a try and let me know what you think!
